Beyond Catalonia is a documentary series that attempts to explain some of the main independence movements in Europe, and some of the lesser-known ones. This episode focuses on Szeklerland. If you travel through the eastern part of the Romanian region of Transylvania, you will find Hungarian flags, restaurants with Hungarian menus and thousands of people who identify themselves as Szekler Hungarians. The territory, which was once part of the Kingdom of Hungary, became part of Romania after World War I. Despite resistance from the Romanian government, the Szekler continue to fight for an autonomy that will probably never materialize.
