Beyond Catalonia is a documentary series that attempts to explain some of the main independence movements in Europe, and some of the lesser-known ones. This episode focuses on Flanders, in Belgium. The most prosperous and predominantly Dutch-speaking region has long sought secession, constantly endangering the delicate Belgian balance. The Flemish nationalist movement is the closest to the Catalan one, both ideologically and personally. The main political party, the New Flemish Alliance, helped former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont go into exile in Belgium after he fled Spain on the day of the Catalan referendum. From his current residence in Waterloo, he has shared his testimony for this documentary.
