BEYOND CATALONIA:FAROE ISLANDS

Beyond Catalonia is a documentary series that attempts to explain some of the main independence movements in Europe, and some of the lesser-known ones. This episode focuses on Faroe Islands. Almost 1,000 kilometres, as well as their culture and language, separate this archipelago from its home country of Denmark. In 1946, the islanders narrowly voted for independence – a sentiment that is still very much alive today – but they face the challenge of creating a united state from 18 separate islands. Still, the Faroes are one of the richest regions in all of Europe. Is independence worth the risk?
