Beyond Catalonia is a documentary series that attempts to explain some of the main independence movements in Europe, and some of the lesser-known ones. This episode focuses on the Basque Country, a territory divided between the north of Spain and the south of France. Rooted in centuries of distinct language and traditions, this movement gained momentum during the sencond half of the 20th century, as the Basques fought against dictatorship in Spain and sought to reclaim their autonomy. It was a complex interplay of peaceful protest and, at times, violent opposition, when the terrorist group ETA emerged to challenge the status quo. Today, the echoes of this struggle continue to shape the region's political landscape.
